Rum and Cigars
Cigars and rum...mmm - a divine combination! I'm sure this pair sounds familiar to you. Doesn't it remind you of your childhood? I do remember a lot of movies and cartoons with pirates fighting their enemies, drinking rum with cigars and singing pirates songs. Which of us hasn't dreamt of being a pirate, navigating through stormy waves and living an adventurous life full of danger? I think there'll be just a few of us who think differently. However the childhood is over and we no longer see pirates as our heroes. Still when you feel nostalgic, there's nothing more calming and relaxing than a glass of fine Cuban (and not only) rum and a good qualitative stogie.
As you probably know, Cuba is rum's motherland as it is for cigars. But don't limit yourself to Cuban products only: there's a huge possibility of choices in this case so be creative and try everything you seem worthy. It's clear that this article is written not only to suggest the idea but also give some ready-to-use pairings. So, make yourself comfortable and be prepared to get some useful information.
Aniversario Pampero - a full-bodied, very aromatic rum; at the opening the drinker is covered with aromatic cloud. The spirit is extremely fragrant with notes of ginger, cloves, cinnamon and tea with lemon. The end is just a little oily with some smoky hints as a background.
Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 showed itself as a perfect pair to this rum. The cigar is light to medium bodied with mighty tobacco palate mixed with cocoa, dried fruit and cinnamon. The rum saturated the stogie with spiciness and regained it from the stick. As the rum revealed itself and the cigar became mightier, they appeared to be good partners leading a kind of conversation together.
Bacardi 8 Reserva Superior - one of the most well-known and highly appreciated Cuban rums in the whole universe. A medium to full-bodied spirit with rich and smooth aroma. This is a premium beverage created from mixing Bacardi Rums aged between 8 and 16 years. The drink is golden colored with deep nuance, a complex and at the same time well-balanced aroma of prunes, apricots, vanilla and nutmeg on a clean oak basis and a prolonged finish with a complete palate. This rum pairs pretty well with the famous Habana - Partagas Serie D No. 4 which is hot, spicy and dry, with hints of black pepper. Rum's fruit and vanilla taste seem to complement the spicy and woody cigar flavor thus making it to be the perfect pair. Their combination evolves a fragrant aroma, which is able to please almost every aficionado, from an experienced one to a newbie.
Havana Club Anejo - real Cuban rum created to match with Cuban cigars. This full-bodied spirit was carefully selected by the best Cuban rum makers - to give pleasure to real connoisseurs by its mighty palate and mild flavor. When sniffed, the rum emits pear and light tobacco aroma along with a more solid bouquet of wooden hints, flower and spicy nuances. The finish is very pleasant and doesn't disappoint a connoisseur.
Ashton VSG Belicoso No. 1 seems to be a good match for this beverage - the stick is medium bodied, the aroma is explicitly sweet, with notes of nutmeg and barely perceptible cedar wood. When pairing, both rum and cigar spiciness and woodiness become more evident. The cigar produces more energy at the expense of this combination.
Mount Gay Extra Old is one of the most well known, highly appreciated and sought after high quality rums of Barbadian origin. This delightful aged spirit is medium-bodied with characteristic subtle vanilla and citrus flavors followed by ripen banana and pastry flavor. It has a prolonged ideal finish caressing one's palate. The rum pairs pretty good with same medium bodied cigars - mild and smooth Macanudo gold and a bit spicier Fuente Hemingway, La Flor Dominicana Torpedo which under the influence of Mount Gay Extra Old becomes woodier and leathery. They all do well for this drink.
